Fighting Boredom

Growing up my mom would never let us say we were bored.

[me] “Moooooom, I’m BOOOOoooOOOooOOred”

[mom] “Well, whose fault is that? I have plenty of things you can help me with to keep you from boredom.”

(At this point, my mom would start listing EVERYTHING that I could do, whether it be for fun or chores to be helpful. Thanks mom.)

[me] “Moooooooooommmmm”

[mom] “There is no reason you should be bored with every activity and belonging with which we have been blessed.”

(my mom’s grammar is pretty much faultless when lecturing, which makes the lecture all the more irritating – not only is it true, but it is also said so eloquently.)

[me] “well, I am still bored now.”

(sometimes you just ignore incredible advice because all you want to do is be whiny and stubborn. Now, this was years and years ago, I would never do this now….no….never…)

Well, I have tried to live my life in this way. There is no reason to be bored. God has given us so much more than we need and I am being incredibly ungrateful when I sit around in boredom. Most of the time, I keep myself busy, but not bored. And prayerfully, not so busy that I lose sight of the things that really matter. About once every few months, everything I have committed to explodes upon the same week and then I am about the farthest you can be from bored – that is when I am neurotic.

(The huz calls my neurotic stage “work mode” – which can be defined as the state of mind Sam retreats into so that she can maximize her time, get everything done efficiently and effectively, but in which her husband’s needs/feelings/wants/desires get trampled in the wake of checking items off her to do list.)

I am getting sidetracked from what I actually wanted to write about. OK. Back to the topic at hand!

Well, we moved and I am working from home. So, I am fighting boredom. I am fighting boredom with:

1. Running (weird!)

2. Climbing (I found a great indoor bouldering gym!)

3. Watching all 10 seasons of Friends. (I like to have this on in the background while putzing around our place, makes me feel like “Friends” are in the apartment with me…pathetic I know, but until you have been in my shoes, don’t judge! I love those guys and gals.)

4. Crafting (quilts, crosstitch, knitting, crocheting – basically, if your grandma does it or your friend is making big bucks off of it on etsy, I am doing it. But, without the big bucks.)

5. Cooking and Baking (wait, what?)

Now, I have never been one to enjoy cooking. I have always cooked to keep us on a budget. The huz and I have 5-7 meals we rotate through and eat that are easy to make, very few ingredients and quick. And I have always made a mean batch of the Ghiradelli boxed brownie mix. Well, since moving to San Fran, I have been branching out. And loving it!

I am now that woman who “plays” in her kitchen. WHAT?! I spent hours last Sunday just putzing around the kitchen. SO FUN.

[Huz] “You sure have been in the kitchen awhile, what the heck are you doing in there??”

[me] “Just playing and putzing”

It has become such a great place to relax, focus on something other than work, or boredom. A friend asked me the other day if I enjoyed cooking and I said yes…how bizarre!

So, I am taking this opportunity to try some of the thousands of recipes I have pinned on Pinterest.

If you are on Pinterest you know the mouth-watering, drool-inducing, waist-expanding recipes circulating and being pinned by thousands. Well, over the past few years, I have pinned my fair share and haven’t really tried too many of them. Until now.

I am excited to share some of the delicious recipes I have found! I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
